Naoussa

Naoussa lies in the North of Greece, in the province of Macedonia. This part of the country is closer to and more akin to the bigger Balkan land mass to the North (including the separate country known as North Macedonia) than it is to the Aegean limbs of Greece to the south.

The wine made here is largely red, and primarily from the grape Xinomavro (pronounced ksee-no-mavroh with the emphasis on the second syllable) which means ‘sour black’.

The wines of Naoussa remind me of those of Barolo in many ways – high in tannin, pale in colour, perfumed and complex.

The wineries here are increasingly being updated and run with modern equipment and modern winemaking techniques, and there are some truly exciting wines being made here, by the likes of Thymiopoulos, Argati and Dalamara.
